Dr. Ron Spallone, D.C.
This is the long version of why I do what I do....
All my life I have been healthy, perseverant, ambitious, and athletic. I played 4 sports in high school and played Division 1 college football. I leveraged my full-ride football scholarship education to obtain a pre-law degree and I was ready to conquer the world. I decided to travel to Hawaii and await my acceptance to law school.
While there, one day after a rainforest hike, we were hit 65 mph head-on by a drunk driver, I thought my life as I knew it was over.
After the head on collision, I was thrown over 100 feet onto the highway then the Jeep I was in rolled three times and landed on top of me. In a feat only aided by God I was able to push the Jeep off of myself which furthered my already massive injuries by tearing numerous muscles. In intensive care I was put on a plethora of drugs which led to severe clinical depression and who I was had totally been redefined.
Prior to the accident I woke at sunrise each morning to paddle on an outrigger canoe team (Maui County Champions 1988!) I ran the beach almost daily. That was now gone. I prayed harder and more frequent than ever and promised God if he could lead me out of this, I would dedicate my life to helping others.
After release from the intensive care, and a month on the drugs I returned for a checkup. I told the doctor I was in 24/7 pain; I couldn't fend for myself with performing basic activities of daily living and I was in severe depression.
I told the doctor that the drugs were only making things worse. I was a Zombie. He said unempathetically that because I didn't break any bones and suffered soft tissue and head injuries that the only thing he could do was try different drugs. He left the room and came back a few minutes later with a script for 6 new medications.
I looked at him and disgustedly said, "Really, that's your plan?" He replied, "You don't have to take them." I said, "Then I won't. I'll figure it out myself." I crumpled the prescription, threw it in the trash, got in my wheelchair and left.
I didn't have a plan B.
Serendipitously, one of my friends asked if I had thought about chiropractic. I didn't know anything about that. I scheduled an appointment. They were the most caring, empathetic and creative practitioners I had been to. Every time I would hit a new goal or be able to perform a new function, they were genuinely excited and happy for me.
I worked with the 2 chiropractors and an acupuncturist, massage therapist and a head injury specialist and after two years of dedication I had regained much of my health back.
They were so inspiring that I decided I would love to be able to help people like they helped me. I
enrolled in chiropractic school and the rest is in the past. Every day that I come to work I try my best to uphold that promise I made to God.
