Understanding Brain Mapping with qEEG Tests

We start the journey with you with a qEEG brain map. This brain map accurately assesses your brain functions as well as how your brain affects your emotional health, cognitive functions, social functions and behavior. The qEEG allows us to identify any areas of overstimulation, under-arousal or instability in the brain which can cause pain, dysfunction and may pre-dispose you to degenerative disease.

The Four Steps of a qEEG Brain Map

Step One- Establishing a Symptomatic Baseline

When you schedule a qEEG brain mapping appointment, you will receive an email that explains how to assess the patient portal and how to complete your cognitive, social, emotional and physiological/metabolic assessments. This information will help establish a symptomatic baseline so we can track your progress. During your treatments, we will use our progress tracker to track your symptoms. You will rate the improvement of your symptoms and we will compare them to your baseline.

Step Two- Obtaining Your Medical History and Collecting EEG Data

During your initial visit, we will conduct a comprehensive and detailed consultation and discuss your medical history, lifestyle choices, diet, medical conditions and former medical treatments to determine if Advanced Neurofeedback is the best choice for you.

Additionally, we will complete an EEG and record the electrical activity in your brain. During this process, an EEG cap that has built-in sensors will be placed on your head. Additionally, ear clips will be attached to your earlobes. A water soluble EEG gel will be placed on each sensor to ensure a good connection and accurate EEG readings. We will record the brain waves of different lobes in your brain. During this time, we will ask you to close your eyes and then open them. During the eyes closed portion, you will need to keep them closed for a full minute.

If this test will be used on patients suffering from sensory issues, we recommend getting comfortable with the procedure before your appointment. This can be accomplished by putting on a tight-fitting swimming cap and leaving it in place for 15 minutes. Additionally, you can use clip on earrings to help mimic the feeling of the clips attached to your ear lobes.

You should be aware that the EEG gel used may make your hair a tad messy. For most people it doesn't interrupt their day but if you have an important social event you may want to schedule your appointment when you can go home and wash your hair. *We have showers here that you can use, but most just wipe their heads and are good tip they get back home.

Step Three- Analyzing the qEEG Data

The data from your EEG is uploaded into our database. Then the EEG data is processed and compared to others of the same sex and in your age group.

This process results in your quantitative EEG (qEEG) brain map report. This report will include your eyes closed and eyes open portion of your EEG, a sub-component analysis, a mid-line report and a complete probability report of the different medical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral issues that may arise.

The brain map compares the results from your assessment discussed in step one with any issues found during the EEG and whether these align.

Then, we will analyze the EEG and investigate any underlying cause of your social, emotional or cognitive problems. Additionally, we will identify any metabolic or physiological issues that may inhibit your brain functions. We will analyze your alpha, beta, delta and theta brain waves, the frequency and magnitude of those waves, connectivity and coherence, phase and assemetry of your brain waves.

Based on these findings, we will work with your to develop brain training exercises and determine whether you need any additional nutritional evaluations.

Step Four- Explaining the qEEG Brain Map Report

At your next visit, we will explain your qEEG brain map report and the analysis of this test. Then, we will custom design a clinical protocol based on these findings. This protocol will help correct any issues or dysfunctions with brainwaves and correct hyper (over) stimulation or hypo (under) stimulation of your brain.

Additionally, we will recommend any further testing based on the results of your quantitative EEG brain map. If additionally tests are needed to further establish an objective symptomatic baseline, they will be done before any treatment is begun. Future tests will then use these test to help manage the progress of your tretment.

We offer free, unlimited computerized cognitive perfomance testing. After your testing and treatment, we will complete another qEEG to compare the results from your baseline. This test will show you how neuroplasticity can improve your brain functions.
